While any day in the year may be studied, most design manuals select one or two days in each month for detailed reference calculations-e.g., in the ESRA and the CIBSE Guide. The declination on any given day in the southern hemisphere has the opposite sign to that in the northern hemisphere on that same day. The winter solstice-i.e., the shortest day-occurs when the declination reaches its minimum value for that hemisphere.
